How to Remove a Henna Tattoo
By: Krysteen ~ 7/1/2021

At Mehndi Madness we’ve been asked if there are ways to remove a henna tattoo before it’s naturally ready to come off. For whatever reason, an accidental smear, the tattoo transferred to another part of the body, or having an important event coming up, these methods can be used together to get the best results.

Here are a few natural and safe suggestion we have:

-Warm water and soap: henna naturally is removed when the dead skin cells are exfoliated, so by using warm water and soap on the area can help lift the design quicker than normal.

-Exfoliating scrubs: along with soap and warm water including a moisturizing exfoliant scrub can help without irritating the skin.

-Baby oil: this oil can help lift the henna pigment from the skin. One way to do this would be to use a cotton ball or cloth to apply baby oil directly to the tattoo and rinse it away after 10 to 20 minutes.

-Lemon juice: Lemons have always been a crucial part to the paste of henna, but it can also be used in the removal. They contain natural skin-lightening and stain-removing properties that can help remove a henna tattoo. Rub a cut lemon on the desired skin area for 2-3 mins then rinse with warm water. (People with sensitive skins should use caution with this method because of the acidic properties.)

-Micellar water: This water contains special particles called Micelles that are used to cleanse. Micelles gently cleanse the skin and break down oil, makeup, and other pigments like henna. To use this method apply the water with a cloth on the skin and rub the area. Many drugstores sell micellar water, and it is also available for purchase online.

Not so natural but also safe method is…

-Body bleaching creams: This is the best and most effective way to remove a henna tattoo. Found in any drug store, it’s made for use on hair/skin. Specifically, to bleach unwanted hair on an upper lip, face, arms. Just follow the directions on the box. The design will lighten greatly.

Since henna is a natural pigment that stains the top layer of skin, nothing can get rid of henna instantly, but these methods may help in cleansing and exfoliating the henna tattoo faster. There is always the option to conceal the tattoo quickly with applying full-coverage makeup or self-tanner.
